EVERYTHING HAS TO BE BEAUTIFUL ALL THE TIME, 2023

Photography

The initial concept behind this triptych developed from a reflection on the pressure to make everything beautiful/artistic once defined as an artist. This output centric self-identification can create both internal and external expectations that replace the joy of the creative process with the obligation.

The series explores a more obsessive side of this pattern of thinking; when art and identity become a little too intertwined the artist might decide, “‘EVERYTHING HAS TO BE BEAUTIFUL ALL THE TIME,’ because who am I if not a maker of beautiful things?”

After embroidering and hand-sewing pearls into a banana peel, time and its deterioration were equally involved mediums. The resulting images navigate what happens when beauty is inserted upon something that has no need or logic for interference, and how fabricated beauty interacts with nature.
